Symposium in honor of Jaime Gómez Rivas

This summer Jaime Gómez Rivas left AMOLF to start a new research group at FOM Institute DIFFER. On December 10th AMOLF organized a symposium ‘Lighting the way’ in honor of the departing group leader to mark this transition.
The group of Gómez Rivas was actually based at the High Tech Campus of Philips Research where it carried out fundamental research that benefitted Philips products as part of a pioneering new paradigm for academic-industrial collaboration.
After the symposium lunch Gómez Rivas and his long term collaborator at Philips Hans van Sprang shared with the audience the story of their intense collaboration learning how to combine their interests finding a common ground. The photo shows Gómez Rivas demonstrating traditional LEDs and the improvements to this technology made by the research in his group. Using nanostructures on phosphorized glass the researchers were able to intensify the emission of white light and to guide it into the preferred direction.
