FOM/Philips Industrial Partnership Program

The FOM-Philips Industrial Partnership Program Improved solid-state light sources (I.24) was established on April 1st, 2010 and came to a formal end on December 31st, 2014. The program represented a continuation of the successful IPP Microphotonic Light Sources. The research was carried out by the group Surface Photonics of the AMOLF’s Center for Nanophotonics. This group is partially located at AMOLF in Amsterdam and partially at Philips Research in Eindhoven, where it is embedded in the group Photonics Materials and Devices headed by Dr. Hans van Sprang. The program was mainly carried out at Philips Research.

The goal of the program was to generate the fundamental knowledge needed to develop high-efficiency solid-state light sources. This program focused on improving the light conversion and outcoupling efficiency of phosphor layers that are used to convert the spectrally narrow bandgap emission from light emitting diodes (LEDs) to a desired broadband (white) output spectrum. This goal was achieved by integrating photonic or plasmonic nanostructures with the phosphor layer. Additionally, the program investigated new methods to enhance the absorption in very thin layers or in layers of weakly absorbing materials.

The program was built around the two funded PhD students (Said R.K. Rodriguez and Giuseppe Pirruccio) and supported by several undergraduate students and a scientific guess. A postdoc (Hemant Tyagi) was hired with the budget reserved to pay 50% of the PI’s salary, which was covered by an ERC grant. This postdoc helped to bridge the research of the Surface Photonics group at AMOLF with the activities of the program.
