Micro-photonic Light Sources

FOM/Philips Industrial Partnership Program

The FOM-Philips Industrial Partnership Program “Micro-photonic Light Sources” (IPP-MLS) was established in 2005 and came to a formal end on 31-03-2010. The program’s goal was: The study of optical phenomena in micro and nano-structured materials and devices for the generation, propagation, manipulation and detection of light. It focuses on creating new concepts and experimental demonstrations of breakthrough approaches to improved device performance. The approach will be exploratory, based on experimentation, modeling, and design. A good physical understanding of the physical phenomena involved is an important objective. The use of state of the art nano-fabrication and clean room technologies will be an essential enabler for the projects to be undertaken.

The program was built on the expertise at AMOLF in the field of nanophotonics and at Philips in photonic materials and devices. In the same year 2005, the Center for Nanophotonics at AMOLF was established consisting of five groups headed by Prof. dr. L. Kuipers, Prof. dr. A. Polman, Prof. dr. A. Lagendijk, Prof. dr. W.L. Vos and Dr. J. Gómez Rivas respectively, all working together on the fundamental study of light generation, propagation, scattering and absorption by structures on subwavelength scales. The IPP-MLS was carried out by the Surface Photonics group headed by Jaime Gómez Rivas..

A unique characteristic of the Surface Photonics group and of the IPP-MLS was that it was embedded in Philips Research in the Photonic Materials and Devices Department headed by Dr. H.A. van Sprang (in the period 2005 – 2008 this department was headed by Dr. E. Meulenkamp). This characteristic allowed a very efficient knowledge transfer between fundamental and applied research. Several scientific collaborations with Philips researchers have been carried out on various topics such as plasmonic sensors, light emission by and scattering from nanostructures, as well as on THz plasmonics.  Many important results were achieved as a consequence of this intensive interaction and cross fertilization:  a total of 8 international patent applications have been filed based on fundamental concepts. Together with Philips and 5 other European partners, we participated in the FP7 project ULTRA combining efforts to develop a THz transceiver for infrared spectroscopy and nanoscopy. Philips Research started projects inspired by the MLS program research and the MLS research program was regularly adjusted to match with industrially relevant topics.

The research of the IPP-MLS consisted of a serie of projects on the following topics:

  • Optical properties of semiconductor nanowires;
  • Light scattering by metallic nanostructures and plasmonic crystals;
  • Light concentration and guiding in ultra-thin layers of absorbing materials.

These systems are potential candidates to tailor the characteristics of light emitted from LEDs and OLEDs and for developing novel optical sensors.
